A Beginner's Guide to Electric Vehicles in the UK: Everything You Need to Know

Electric vehicles have gone from niche curiosity to mainstream reality. In 2025, EVs accounted for over 25% of new car sales in the UK, and the used EV market is growing rapidly. If you're considering making the switch, here's everything you need to know.

How Far Can an Electric Car Actually Go?

Official WLTP range figures are optimistic. In real-world UK driving conditions — cold weather, motorway speeds, heating on — expect roughly 70-85% of the advertised range. A car with a 300-mile official range will typically manage 210-255 miles in winter conditions.

That said, the average UK commute is just 10 miles each way. Most modern EVs will easily handle a full week of commuting on a single charge.

Charging: Home vs Public

Home charging is by far the cheapest and most convenient option. A dedicated 7kW wallbox (around £800-£1,200 installed) will charge most EVs from empty to full overnight. On a standard electricity tariff, a full charge costs £10-£15 — roughly 3-5p per mile.

Public charging varies wildly in cost and reliability. Rapid chargers (50kW+) can add 100 miles of range in 30-40 minutes but typically cost 40-79p per kWh — making it comparable to petrol costs. The UK now has over 70,000 public charge points, with the network expanding rapidly.

What About Battery Degradation?

This is the most common concern among EV sceptics, and it's largely overblown. Modern EV batteries are designed to last 150,000-200,000 miles with only 10-15% capacity loss. Most manufacturers offer 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranties.

To maximise battery life: avoid regularly charging to 100%, don't let it drop below 20% frequently, and minimise use of rapid chargers for everyday charging.

Running Costs: The EV Advantage

  • Fuel: 3-5p/mile (home) vs 12-15p/mile (petrol)
  • Road tax: £0 for EVs registered before April 2025, £10/year from April 2025
  • Servicing: 30-50% cheaper than petrol — no oil changes, fewer brake pad replacements (thanks to regenerative braking), no exhaust or clutch components
  • Insurance: Currently 15-25% higher than equivalent petrol cars due to repair costs, but the gap is narrowing
  • Congestion charge: EVs are exempt from the London Congestion Charge (saving £15/day) and ULEZ

Best Used EVs Under £20,000

  • Nissan Leaf (40kWh, 2019+): 168-mile range, reliable, cheap to run — from £12,000
  • Renault Zoe (2020+): 245-mile range, nippy around town — from £13,000
  • Hyundai Kona Electric: 300-mile range, excellent value — from £18,000
  • MG ZS EV: 273-mile range, spacious, well-equipped — from £15,000
  • Volkswagen ID.3: 263-mile range, great tech — from £19,000

Is an EV Right for You?

An EV is ideal if you can charge at home, do mostly urban/suburban driving, and want the lowest running costs. It's less ideal if you regularly need to travel 250+ miles without stops, don't have home charging, or need to tow heavy loads.
