Understanding ULEZ & Clean Air Zones
What is ULEZ?
The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is a London-wide area where vehicles must meet strict exhaust emission standards or pay a daily charge of £12.50. Since August 2023, ULEZ covers all of Greater London, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
What Are Clean Air Zones?
Clean Air Zones (CAZs) are areas in UK cities where targeted action is taken to improve air quality. Cities including Birmingham, Bath, Bristol, Bradford, Portsmouth, Sheffield, and Newcastle have introduced CAZs with daily charges for non-compliant vehicles.
Which Vehicles Are Affected?
Petrol vehicles must meet Euro 4 standards (typically manufactured from 2006 onwards). Diesel vehicles must meet Euro 6 standards (typically manufactured from September 2015 onwards). Electric and hydrogen vehicles are always exempt.
Daily Charges
London charges £12.50 per day for non-compliant cars. Other cities charge between £8 and £50 per day depending on the zone and vehicle type. Charges apply every day the vehicle is driven within the zone, including weekends.
