Understanding Insurance Groups

In the UK, every car is assigned an insurance group from 1 to 50. Group 1 is the cheapest to insure and group 50 is the most expensive. The group is determined by factors such as vehicle value, engine size, performance, repair costs, safety features and security ratings.

1–10
Low

Smaller, less powerful vehicles. Cheapest to insure — ideal for new or young drivers.

11–20
Below Average

Modest family cars and economical hatchbacks. Still affordable insurance premiums.

21–30
Average

Mid-range vehicles including popular SUVs and saloons. Moderate insurance costs.

31–40
Above Average

Larger engines, performance variants and premium brands. Higher premiums expected.

41–50
High

High-performance, luxury and specialist vehicles. The most expensive insurance groups.

Tips to Reduce Your Insurance Cost

Add Security Features

Fitting a Thatcham-approved alarm or immobiliser, and parking in a garage overnight, can lower your premium.

Build No-Claims Bonus

Each claim-free year earns you a no-claims discount. Protect it with a no-claims bonus protection add-on.

Limit Your Mileage

Declare an accurate annual mileage. Lower miles means lower risk and a cheaper premium.

Consider Telematics

A black box or telematics policy lets your insurer see how safely you drive — ideal for younger drivers.

Choose a Lower Group

When choosing your next car, look at the insurance group. A lower group could save you hundreds per year.

Increase Your Excess

Opting for a higher voluntary excess reduces your annual premium — but make sure you can afford it if you claim.
